Federal Court Rules on Patent Eligibility in Speech Recognition Technology Case

Dialect LLC v. Amazon.com Inc. addressed patent eligibility for speech-recognition technology under 35 U.S.C. § 101. Applying the Alice two-step framework, the Eastern District of Virginia concluded that a challenged claim was directed to an abstract idea and lacked an inventive concept. The ruling resulted in dismissal of the relevant claim and illustrates the continuing difficulty of obtaining patent protection for software-related claims that rely on conventional technology.
